The upgraded and extended Nausori runway will allow narrow body short-haul jet aircraft – B737 and similar type aircraft – to operate on greatly improved load capacity and with improved operational accessibility.
The project, worth FJ$60m ($28.19m), included the expansion of airport facilities and construction of a bigger runway and a new terminal. Additionally, the existing runway and pavement infrastructure was be completely upgraded.

The $60 million project to extend and upgrade the Nausori International Airport runway reached practical completion in November 2021.
The runway upgrade project was completed despite COVID-19’s devastating financial impact on their business.

Scope of works
The scope of works also included the construction of a drained strip area and a runway end safety area, the installation and upgrade of associated navigational aids and the diversion of existing road infrastructure.

Runway expansion
The project included the runway extension from 1868 metres to 2148m, 30m to 45m wide, and runway strip width increased to 280m.
Additionally, taxiways designated for aircraft were widened, and a new parking apron was created outside in preparation for a future phase of planned terminal upgrades.
